What is GPS? Does it cost me anything?
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather condition, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS.

Where do you get your images?
We license aerial photography and satellite imagery from a variety of vendors.

Is the uPro™ USGA legal?
Yes, the uPro™ conforms to USGA rules. As of January 1, 2006 the USGA, under ruling 14-3, deemed the use of distance measuring devices legal to be used during play under local rule. This ruling does not apply to devices that measure other conditions that will affect a player’s game such as wind or gradient. If no local rule is adopted, you should check with your golf professional prior to use in a USGA sanctioned event.

What is the USGA?
The USGA is the United States Golf Association. The USGA is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1894 run by golfers for the benefit of golfers.

Is the screen still viewable outdoors in bright light?
The uPro™’s high resolution color screen has been designed specifically for good visibility in direct sunlight.

How can the uPro™ help my game?
Having accurate distances is a very important aspect to the game. The uPro™ allows you to get distances to all features on a course while viewing the layout of the course. This provides the fastest and easiest way to acquire the information needed to make a confident swing each and every time. The uPro™ also offers the ability to use advanced features such as tracking the distance of each shot. Having a realistic view of how far you hit the ball, will allow you to understand your game better, and help you improve your game.

In a nutshell, what information does the uPro™ give me?
The uPro™ provides distances to every feature on the course in a fashion unlike any other GPS device. First, the uPro™ provides a video flyover of the hole. Distances are provided superimposed on the actual image of the hole, allowing for an instant and complete understanding of all distance information required. Finally, the user is given the ability to measure to any point on the course using our AnyPoint™ technology. This effectively replaces and expands on the features of laser based rangefinders.

What is the difference between GPS and Laser?
The primary advantage of laser rangefinders is their ability to operate on any golf course without prior mapping of the course. Unfortunately, this same advantage is the biggest disadvantage of a laser rangefinder when it comes to other aspects of the game. Lasers can only provide distances to what it can effectively focus on. This means that anything that blocks a laser's line of sight renders it useless. Trees, doglegs and flat objects such as bunkers, greens, hazards and fairways are typical examples. Multiple points can't be measured with a laser unit, causing distractions and slowing the game down.

The primary disadvantage of a GPS based system is their reliance on pre-mapped data. Unlike laser systems, GPS based systems can only measure to locations on the course that have been previously measured and stored in the device. However, GPS systems have many well documented advantages. The first advantage being that they can provide measurement data much quicker without requiring the user to focus the device on a particular spot. Additionally, GPS based systems can provide multiple measurements simultaneously to the user which greatly speeds up the game. GPS systems are also not limited by the line of sight limitations of a laser based system.

Is the uPro™ a GPS system or a laser rangefinder?
With the uPro™, you get the ultimate combination! The uPro™ provides all of the advantages of a GPS based system and a laser based system. The patent-pending AnyPoint™ technology allows the user to measure the distance to and from any location on the golf course without the line of site restrictions of a laser. In addition, the uPro™ 's ProMode™ provides the ability to visually see through doglegs or terrain changes and quickly see the precise distances to hazards while viewing the actual layout on the screen. This powerful combination of GPS and laser, not only increases the speed of play, but also provides the information without the need for interpretation or translation.

What is the resolution of the screen?
The screen is a high resolution 320x420 color screen.

How many courses will the uPro™ hold?
The uPro™ comes with a MicroSD card that has the capability to hold 50 courses in ProMode™.

What kind of battery does the uPro™ use?

How long will the battery last?
The battery on the uPro™ will last approximately 10-12 hours.

How long will it take to charge the battery?

Can I use any rechargeable Lithium Ion battery?
No, the uPro™ and its battery have been designed to work together. Any other battery runs the risk of damaging your uPro™, potentially damaging the battery or worse.

Is the uPro™ water resistant?
The uPro™ has a level of water resistance. To make your uPro™ more water resistant, we recommend purchasing the protective skin. Is the uPro™ compatible with Macs?
Yes, the uPro™ does work with Macs.

What are the system requirements to use the uPro™?
Windows 2000 is the oldest version that is compatible with the uPro™. The uPro™ also works with Windows XP and Vista. The uPro™ is compatible with FireFox version 1.5 or greater and Internet Explorer version 6 or greater. An internet connection is required to download courses.

Do I need to install any software or drivers to use the uPro™?
The uPro™ does not require the additional download of any drivers or software to use. You simply connect the uPro™ to your computer with the uPro™ provided USB cable and your computer will automatically detect your uPro™ and launch our website so you can start downloaded courses or manage your account.

When will additional software downloadable features, like voice recognition, be available?
We anticipate additional software features will be available late summer 2008.

Will there be a cost for additional software downloads?
Yes, additional software features such as voice recognition will carry a small additional fee.

Is the uPro™ pre-loaded with any golf courses?
The uPro™ isn’t pre-loaded with any golf courses, but you do receive one free ProMode™ download with the purchase of a uPro™.

Why isn’t the uPro™ pre-loaded with any golf courses?
We want your uPro™ to have the most up-to-date course information. Each time your uPro™ is connected to your computer and you log into your account, you are alerted to updates in the course data already on your uPro™ or courses that have been previously purchased. Courses are continually changing and updating their course information. If we were to pre-load the uPro™ with course data, then you could have inaccurate information out on the course. We want you to always have the most accurate information that we can provide.

Is my local golf course available?
You can check our course finder to see if the course you are looking for is available for download.

Can I be notified of new courses in my area?
Each time you log into your account you will be notified of new courses that are available for download in your area. Just be sure fill in the address field when you register your uPro™.

How much does a course download cost?
Course downloads are just $10 for ProMode™ and $2 for BasicMode™. Packages are available if you would like to purchase multiple courses and these packages lower the cost per course significantly.

Do I have to download all the courses at once to buy a package?
No, you can purchase the package now and use the credits when you want to download other courses at another time.

Will the credits that I have purchased ever expire?
No, the credits that you have purchased will never expire. They are yours as long as long you own a uPro™.

I bought too many credits; can I get a refund for the ones I haven't used?
Once the credits are purchased they are non-refundable.

Will I ever lose my courses that I have downloaded?
No, you will never lose the courses that you have downloaded. Your account keeps track of the courses you have downloaded and allows you to access those courses as long as you own a uPro™. This is unlike many other devices that disable the use of your courses if you do not pay an annual fee.

Can I download courses in any state or country?
With our no membership fee system, there are no limitations to what courses you can download, regardless of their location.

How many courses can I download each year?
There are no limits as to how many courses you can download each year. With our no membership fee system, you only pay for the courses that you want.

With the free ProMode™ download that I get with my purchase, can I download any course? What if it's not available?
Your one free ProMode™ download is good for any course. This course will be your home course, the course you play the most. If the course that you want is not available we will map your course within 4 business days. This applies only to courses that have imagery that meets our quality standards to be displayed in ProMode™.

What if I want to download a course that isn't available, will you map it within 4 business days?
The 4 day mapping policy only applies to your home course. You can always request a course to be mapped. Once you request a course to be mapped, it is added to the list of courses to be mapped. You can sign up to be notified when the course you requested has been mapped.

Can I share the courses I've downloaded with friends?
Each course that you download works only on your uPro™ unit.

Do you walk each and every course?
We don't require the courses to be walked to achieve accurate mapping. Our patent-pending methods provide accurate results and eliminate many of the issues with the data (or lack of data) generated when mapping by walking a course.

How are the courses mapped?
We use a proprietary method that leverages data from a variety of sources coupled with satellite and aerial photography. With the combination of our high standards for mapping and proprietary mapping techniques, we provide information that is as good as or better than any other device on the market.

Who maps your courses?
Here at uPlay, we have a staff of highly trained professional mappers, who not only map thousands of points per hole, but also perform hundreds of quality checks. We want to make sure that you have the most accurate information when you're out on the course. Our mapping process is extremely rigorous and we would not allow third party vendors to attempt to complete it as it would clearly not meet our quality standards.

Can I map a course myself?

Will weather conditions affect the accuracy of the uPro™?
Weather does not play a significant role in the accuracy of the uPro™.

Does the time of day or year affect the accuracy of the uPro™?
The accuracy of all GPS based systems is dependent on the number of satellites that the system's receiver acquires, the signal strength of the GPS acquisition lock, and the separation of these satellites in orbit. The orbit and separation of the GPS satellites will vary throughout the day and year based on your geographic location on the earth. However, the uPro™’s state of the art design enables the acquisition of a large number of satellites under nearly any condition which allows for consistent and accurate results at all times.

Does the uPro™ calculate changes in elevation?
No, the uPro™ does not calculate changes in elevation.

What is the difference between ProMode™ and BasicMode™?
ProMode™ is what makes the uPro™ truly unique compared to any other product on the market. While in ProMode™ you can access the advanced features of the uPro™, such as SmartView™, AnyPoint™, and video flyovers. ProMode™ helps you plan the perfect strategy for your game; from the video flyover with yardage markers, to AnyPoint™ to plan lay up shots, to the innovative SmartView™ the uPro™ puts the game in a whole new perspective.

BasicMode™ is similar to other GPS units out on the market. It provides all the basic functionality. The green view gives the basic distances to the green center, front, and back. The hazard view shows the distance to the front, and back of all hazards. Hazards are automatically displayed in sequential order based on your current position. In BasicMode™ all the distances are clearly conveyed in large easy to read numbers that easily viewable at a glance or from a distance.

What is SmartView™?
Our patent pending SmartView™ technology is a part of ProMode™. SmartView™ shows you the area that you will be aiming your ball into, the green, and an overview of the hole. The first view is based on where you are standing on the course. It will show where you should be targeting your shot. The second view will show you the green. The third view will show you an overview of the hole you are on. To switch between views, press the center button. SmartView™ will automatically update as you move about the course.

What is AnyPoint™?
Our patent pending AnyPoint™ technology is encompassed in what we call measure mode. Measure mode allows you to move a curser around to measure the distance to anything on the course. With AnyPoint™ you're not limited to just the pre-mapped points. AnyPoint™ technology gives you the functionality of a laser only better. Lay up measurements have never been easier with AnyPoint™. Now you can optimally plan your current shot and your approach shot, so you can have the perfect distance to the green.

Can my uPro™ provide the distance to the pin?
Pin locations are not shown on the imagery available for the uPro™. But with our AnyPoint™ technology, you can measure to any point on the green, which provides more useful information than just the distance to the pin.

Will the uPro™ keep score, track my shots, and provide statistics?
The uPro™ will have the ability to keep score and track shots. It will be available as an additional software download mid-late summer 2008 for a small additional fee.

What if it starts raining while I'm out on the course? Is my uPro™ safe?
Treat your uPro™ like you would your cell phone. If it's sprinkling and gets some water on it,it will be fine. However, the uPro™ is not designed to withstand submersion in water.

I've heard other products have a problem with fluttering. What is fluttering and will the uPro™ have that problem?
Fluttering occurs when the GPS units is switching which satellites it has locked onto. Devices with an external antenna tend to have a problem with fluttering. If the antenna is disrupted or covered in any way, it will de-tune the unit and cause the unit to re-lock onto different satellites, thus causing fluttering. The uPro™ is designed to lock quickly and stay locked onto the GPS satellites, which eliminates the problem of fluttering. Even if you put your uPro™ in your pocket it will stay tuned and locked.

I lost my uPro™ and want to buy another one, do I have to pay for all the courses I downloaded again?
No, you don't have to purchase the courses that you have already downloaded. Your lost, stolen, or damaged unit needs to be deactivated. Once it's deactivated your new unit can be activated for your account and you will then be able to use your courses again.

How do I deactivate my lost, stolen, or damaged uPro™?
You will be able to deactivate your lost, stolen, or damaged uPro™ from your user page. To access your user page, please log into your account.

Are there international courses available for download?
Yes, international courses will be available for download. We have started to map courses in Canada and Mexico and will continue to map courses around the world.

Can I use the uPro™ in other countries?
The uPro™ can be used anywhere in the world. GPS technology doesn't limit where the device can be used. GPS is available worldwide.
